Popule Meus (Reproaches)

SATB chorus, SSABarBB solos (2011)

Popule Meus – O My People (Reproaches)

Composed for the CMPO301 course at New Zealand School of Music in August 2011, this work is an exploration of spatial awareness in Sacred Choral Music. The text ‘Popule Meus’ is taken from the Reproaches or Improperia, a series of antiphons and responses expressing the remonstrance of Jesus Christ with His people. They are often sung as part of the observance of the Passion, usually on Good Friday.

Popule Meus was first performed by the Choir of Wellington Cathedral of St Paul in concert in late 2011. The same choir featured a second performance of the work during the three-hour-long vigil in Wellington Cathedral of Saint Paul, on Good Friday, 2012.
